Why You Should Be Blogging

Why You Should Be Blogging

Designing websites and blogs for Christian authors and writers is becoming a passion for me. I meet so many genuine people this way. They are passionate people. God has blessed them with some incredible stories and lessons and they are bursting to share them. I get such a thrill when an author or writer sees the result of our collaboration together. Their website is their personal property on the world-wide web and I am happy to help them homestead it, if only for a while. Authors and writers often ask me why they should blog. There are a multitude of answers to that question. Search Google and you’ll find the answers vary by industry or purpose. For instance, companies need to blog for an entirely different reason that non-profit organizations do. The...

Markets, Submission Guidelines and Contest Deadlines for February 2012

I might be a bit late in getting this monthly update out. My apologies. It’s been a very busy month. What NOT to Bring to a Writer’s Conference

What NOT to Bring to a Writer’s Conference

Attending a Christian writers conference is both challenging and exhilarating. Conference season is right around the corner and Christian writers everywhere will be working on elevator pitches, editing their proposals and reviewing schedules and workshops. Instead of presenting you a list of what to bring to a conference, I’d like to offer my advice on what NOT to bring. The one thing you don’t need at  a Christian writers conference is fear.  Fear is debilitating. It binds and enslaves. It creeps into your mind and divides your thoughts leaving you feeling overwhelmed and full of self-doubt. Writers, as well as any other creative thinkers, get pummeled (almost daily) with self-doubt. If we allow that doubt to overwhelm us, we are participating in...

Are You Writing for the Wrong Reason?

Are You Writing for the Wrong Reason?

Why do you write? What’s your point? Who do you hope to reach? What do you have to say? These are a clarifying questions. Asking them brings your motives into focus. Focus  [foh-kuhs] a point upon which attention, activity, etc, is directed or concentrated I remember a point in my writing career when I went to my husband for some advice. I was in a bad frame of mind. You know the one. You get so overwhelmed with writing and editing and marketing your work that you end up feeling like a person with ADHD in the drugstore trying to decide which cold medicine to choose from the never-ending brands and remedies. You could stand there for hours and walk out with one of each brand name. After recounting to my husband all the things I had to do to actually...

Can You Relate? How to Feel Miserable as a Writer

Can You Relate? How to Feel Miserable as a Writer

Writers are an odd lot. We are creative, which makes us yearn for affirmation. We are artistic, which makes us susceptible to incredible self-doubt. And finally, we are open-minded on many subjects, which makes us difficult to pigeonhole. If you’re a writer, you should read James Scott Bell recent post on The Kill Zone, a blog of 11 top thriller and mystery authors, called How to Feel Miserable as a Writer.  He attributed the author of the list, Keri Smith (10 Ways an Artist Can Feel Miserable), and then revised it specifically for writers. When I first read it, I related to nearly every one of the ten items on the list. By the way, if you don’t subscribe to The Kill Zone, I highly recommend it. Great stuff from some great authors. Email...
