Using idioms in your writing causes the reader to look past the words they are reading to the image the words are suggesting. In the example above, I wanted my sons to look past the initial impression of a person and look for acts of integrity, character and goodness.

In the bestselling book and box office smash Forrest Gump, a variation of this idiom is used. Forrest Gump's response to anyone who called him stupid was an idiom from his mother, 'stupid is as stupid does.' When you think of this movie, this idiom comes to mind, no?

Idioms in your writing can connect with your reader like no other form of writing but don't overuse them or you loose the reader. Remember that idioms are image or concept producing writing tools. An excessive use of idioms will overwhelm your reader but a well placed idiom in your writing could be the one phrase or concept that your reader remembers.
